La Roche d'Oëtre
It took us time to realize that "la Roche d'Oëtre" was a geological site of astounding beauty. For our children and us, it was - and still is - a wonderful picnic place at summer time.
La Roche d'Oëtre, a lost piece of the armorican mountains, is indeed a kind of curiosity with its 118 meters high, right in the middle of the Suisse Normande meadows. At the foot of it, runs the river Rouvre which joins the Orne a few kilometers down.
There, the Rouvre is a bit like a mountain stream, rocky and shallow. We love to paddle in while admiring the blue dragonflies, the forest and of course the rocks over us.
Recently, a touristical centre has opened. It is resolutely modern, huge and - in our opinion - quite a disgrace! Still it offers good facilities: an information desk, exhibition rooms, a shop... and an excellent restaurant favoured by the English families living around.
The hikers use its car park as a meeting point, sign-posted paths lead to the river and all around the site. During the touristic season, all kind of visits and outdoor activities are organised.
In summer, it is also very easy to join la "Maison du Paysage", literaly the "Landscape house", a few kilometers away along the river side if you like walking. You just need to wear good shoes. You can also reach it by car through the village of Bréel. It is worthwile seeing just as la "Maison de la Rivière", the "River house", nearby.
Both places have long been run by enthousiastic people, keen to let you discover their paradise and take you on a discovery outdoor trip. They also offer facilities: shop, exhibitions, coffee place..
